about

All songs by Anthony McIlwain (Grim Tilla)

Grim Tilla’s latest EP, Might be Something, is a collection of songs deeply rooted in place.
Inspired by his time living in Central Australia, his music emulates the expansive landscapes of the desert, while his lyrics grapple with the indescribable qualities of place, human experience and love, and the relationships between them. Resting upon the interplay between his intricate guitar playing and raspy vocal style, the music is rich with plucked guitar, jazz influenced chord movements, polyrhythmic percussion and the drone of desert blues.

This ethos and his deftness with the guitar are most strikingly evident on EP highlight ‘Eucalypt Ghost’. Strongly influenced by the guitar sounds of the Saharan desert blues, the song evokes the ancient walls, gorges and waterholes of the Western MacDonnell Ranges, situated in Arrernte country in Australia’s central desert. Touching upon the experience of being physically dwarfed by a landscape, the age of which lies beyond the limits of comprehension, it is also a song that seeks to capture something of the uncanny experience of being both in and out of place.
